The Great Adirondack Century Run

July 9-12, 2015

Imagine seeing or hearing over 100 species of warblers, vireos, hawks, ducks and more of the Adirondack Park. This 6 million acre wilderness area, the largest wild park east of the Mississippi River boasts many must see birds; Lincoln Sparrow, Gray Jay, Bicknell’s Thrush, Evening Grosbeak, Black Backed Woodpecker, Three Toed Woodpecker and much more!

Join WVWA’s Dennis Miranda and Jamie Stewart on a high octane, full throttle adventure of the Adirondacks. Explore the vast St. Regis River plains, discover the boreal forest of Bloomingdale Bog and reach the summit of Whiteface Mountain! Enjoy the quaint village of Lake Placid with their interesting stores and excellent restaurants.

Price $1325.00 per person based on single occupancy
Price $1885.00 per couple based on double occupancy

  • Deposit of $500 per person required to hold the spot
  • Balance is due by June 12, 2015

Price includes:

  • Three nights hotel accommodations at the Crown Plaza Resort in Lake Placid, NY.
  • Three breakfasts, four lunches and two dinners
  • Transportation is included to and from all of the destinations in the Adirondacks.

Dennis Miranda is a passionate and tireless advocate for the natural world.  As an avid hiker, self-taught bird-watcher, amateur botanist and all-around naturalist.  He has enthused, inspired, and informed both young and old of the wonders of the natural world of the Eastern United States and Latin America for over a decade.  He has organized and led trips to some of the most outstanding nature filled destinations in the world such as the California Redwoods, Ramsey Canyon of Arizona, Acadia National Park in Maine, the Adirondacks of New York and even the Zapata Biosphere Preserve of Cuba.  He is a seasoned and patient nature guide who takes great pride in imparting and articulating the great intricacies of the natural world for all to understand and appreciate.

Itinerary

Thursday, July 9, 2015 – Day One

Depart WVWA Barn at 8AM for Lake Placid, New York. WVWA will provide a convenient passenger van driven by staff. Estimated time of arrival at the Crowne Plaza would be in the vicinity of 4:00 PM.

Boxed lunch will be provided. 

Dinner will be on your own.

Friday, July 10, 2015 – Day Two

6:30 AM - Breakfast at the Crowne Plaza Resort.

7:00 AM - Depart for the St. Regis River Plains for a day of birding.  We will caravan ride for an hour to the destination. The bulk of the day will be a series of stops along secondary roads over uneven surfaces at times. The frequent roadside stops will yield short walks in this vast region of boreal forest, open country and extensive wetlands. The varied habitat will be advantageous for seeing Ruby Crowned Kinglet, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Black backed Three Toed Woodpecker, Nashville Warbler, Lincoln Sparrow and American Three toed Woodpecker among many others!

Boxed lunch will be provided.

4:30 PM – Return to Crowne Plaza Resort to freshen up and relax.

6:00 PM – Group dinner at local restaurant

Saturday, July 11, 2015 – Day Three

6:30 AM – Breakfast at the Crown Plaza

7:00 AM – Visit the High Peaks Region. Climb Whiteface Mountain (by car) and make frequent road side stops in search Blue-headed Vireo, Blackpoll Warbler, Swainson's Thrush, Bicknell's Thrush, Pine Siskin, Common Raven, Bay breasted Warbler, Cape May Warbler. Enjoy the scenic view of the Great Range and other peaks.

Other local stops will be made for grassland birds, marsh birds and waterfowls including Common Loon, Hooded Merganser, Pied billed Grebe and other local breeders. We will caravan ride for 45 minutes to our first destination. The bulk of the day will be a series of stops along secondary roads over uneven surfaces at times. 

Boxed lunch will be provided.

4:30 PM – Return to the Crowne Plaza Hotel to freshen up and relax.

6:00 PM – Dinner at a local restaurant

Sunday, July 12, 2015 – Day Four

6:30 AM – Breakfast at the Crowne Plaza

7:00 AM – Checkout

7:30 AM – Tour Bloomingdale Bog and local environs. Search for warblers galore; Magnolia Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, Palm Warbler, and Mourning Warbler. Sharp-shinned Hawk, Coopers Hawk and Goshawk have all been seen in this wild area. Other rarities that may be seen include Rusty Blackbird, Evening Grosbeak, Olive sided Flycatcher and Barred Owl.

Boxed lunch will be provided.

1:00 PM – Depart for Ambler, PA

7:00 PM – Arrive at the Four Mills Barn, Ambler, PA
